The challenge of developing a physical product remotely

We made a decision! Three weeks ago we complemented our team with a new industrial designer called Manu and kicked off the product development process immediately after recruitment. Together, we are now standing in front of the next obstacle to overcome.

As you perhaps know from one of our blog posts the AER team is working fully remotely. This makes the development of a physical product increasingly difficult, as only one half of the team is present in the office in Stuttgart, Germany.

Prototypes, for instance, can therefore only be tested for by a handful of people, while the other half of the team is scattered all over the world.

In the diverging phase of brainstorming ideas, this was fairly easy. Brainstorming and e-sketching ideas can be done from anywhere.

Currently, however, we are transitioning to the converging phase and thereby narrowing down the number of prototypes we want to proceed with.

From now on, the internal communication has to be adjusted accordingly. A part of our team will now become less and less able to give feedback on prototypes, as we are simply unable to touch, feel and experience the “flying objects”.

Resulting in the need for excellent documentation of the progression in order to have the whole team up-to-date.

Since we are now doing it internally, we want to share first insights with you too, which is why we will launch our “Behind The Product” series soon.

Stay tuned for the first sneak peeks on Instagram!
